In need for a new art place

Posted by rerfov-the-cringr - February 22nd, 2024

Tumblr was my main <s> trash can </s> art site for quite some time, thanks to its lack of algorithm and tech bros of any kind, not to mention the obvious quick-block button and interesting content.

However, it seems that the owners are ready to sell the user-made content to an AI company, which, well, sucks a lot.

One might think that it's not worth it, judging by the usual quality of said content, but the owners keep on trying to gain any profit from that site, and that's what's driving them, probably.

I am in need of art site recommendations. Anything that won't support AI.

Thinking of moving to Bluesky, I'm afraid of tech bros, though.

Well there are plenty of Art subreddits though i recommend you try and not mingle too much with the upvote system. The people there turned into proper cattle from it. Also yeah AI lol. Dunno what the opinion of it is there but i think they dislike it.

Try Pinterest and look into whether they give AI their scraps or not. Last i heard its still doing well and the people there are decent, leave politics at the door though, everybody else did.

Dribbble, Fabrik and Behance are unfamiliar to me but they are all artist-oriented sites last time i checked.

Newgrounds, Artgram, Inkblot and Cara specifically don't allow AI. You've already joined one of these! :D

Cara in particular was made as a response to the proliferation of AI and Artstation's embrace of it, alienating a lot of their users. From my understanding they work closely together with the developers of Glaze and Nightshade too (two tools that render your images unusable for AI).

Reddit just signed a deal with an "undisclosed AI company" to sell their data for genAI. Specific art subreddits might not allow AI generated content, but I don't think that will keep your data safe from scraping. Seeing as you're ready to jump ship from Tumblr because they're planning to sell their user data to AI, Reddit just seems like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

Pinterest is not an art site. It's a site for making pinboards of images you like, which in theory is fine, but in practise turned it into a haven for unsourced reposts of other people's art. Everything is behind a log-in wall, and the Google Image Search pollution from this endless reposting has been insane. They too sell your data for AI.
